Here a Love, There a Love, Everywhere a Love....

From ESPN - August 31, 2004

PAGE 2

ESPN is celebrating its 25th Anniversary by looking back at the top 25 moments, headlines, movies and so on.

Well, that's great -- but that's all in the past.

At Page 2 we look to the future, so here is our take on some of the more notable controversies that will be coming soon to an ESPN.com near you.

Here's one....

Jennifer Love Hewitt
vs. Lindsay Lohan (2008)

Nearly destitute and forced to take work on a midseason replacement on the WB Network, Jennifer Love Hewitt sues Lindsay Lohan (pictured) for identity theft after the latter appears in the hit film, "I Recall What You Did Last Autumn."

Lohan vehemently denies the charges, even going so far as to include a song about Hewitt's claims on her debut album.

The media quickly dubs the trial "Augmentation-gate," and legal experts posit that a victory for Hewitt would unleash a slew of lawsuits that might gridlock the courts for years to come. Luckily, the two agree to settle their differences out of court, as the main event in a new edition of Fox's Celebrity Boxing.

'GARFIELD' HAS INT'L BOX OFFICE

by Bec Smith

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -- Despite a narrow finish, "The Village" couldn't spook "Garfield" away from the top spot internationally this weekend. "Garfield: The Movie" caught about $8.9 million for Fox this weekend on 2,575 screens across 31 territories. The film opened in Russia ($718,000 on 184 screens), Hungary ($411,000 on 29) and Norway ($382,000 on 63), boosting the cume for the world's laziest cat to approximately $64.3 million.

Buena Vista's "The Village" made another $8.5 million this weekend across 12 markets from 1,480 screens, for an estimated cume-to-date of $29.8 million. The M. Night Shyamalan film opened at No. 1 in Holland with about $1.1 million this weekend from 98 screens, more than double its nearest competitor, Fox's "I, Robot." The thriller also opened at No. 1 in Sweden ($630,000 from 90 screens) and Norway ($478,000 from 60 screens). In its second week in France and the United Kingdom, "The Village" took in about $3.2 million from 570 screens (off 45%) and $2.8 million from 436 screens, respectively.

GARFIELD SETS CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS IN CHINA

BEIJING, CHINA - Cartoon character Garfield has set the cat among the pigeons in China with a copyright infringement case, the China Daily said Saturday.

The case has been filed by Paws, Inc. of the United States against three Chinese companies it accuses of publishing Garfield books without permission.

The Garfield case is being heard by the Beijing Second Intermediate People's Court against Beijing Kewen Book Information Technology Co. Ltd., Beijing Science and Culture Cambridge Co. Ltd. and Xiwang Publishing House, the latter based in north China's Shanxi Province.

The three companies denied wrongdoing, the newspaper said.

"As the two sides still have to put forward more evidence, Friday's trial only heard the statement and argument of the two sides but did not give a verdict," it added.

Garfield, a daily comic strip about a mischievous tiger-striped cat, is syndicated in 2,600 newspapers worldwide and is read by some 260 million people.

China's State Council has estimated the market value of counterfeit goods in China at about $19 billion to $24 billion annually.

The bogus trade affects a wide range of U.S. products, including films, music, publishing, software, pharmaceuticals, information technology and automotive parts.

A snip it from
ARRINGTON HAS BECOME FACE OF THE REDSKINS DESPITE RIFT WITH MANAGEMENT OVER WRINKLE CONTRACT, LINEBACKER SAYS HE'S DEVOTED TO TEAM, FANS, COMMUNITY (Long title, huh?)

LaVar Arrington, 26, has become the most prominent athlete in the Washington area since being drafted second overall in 2000.

by Jason La Canfora

LaVar Arrington trudged through a thick moat of standing rain water encircling the artificial turf practice field at Redskins Park, navigated a slick and muddy hill and approached a throng of waiting fans. It was early in training camp and the Redskins had finished their second long practice of the day — one completed well past dinnertime because of a thunderstorm — but Arrington was among his people, and instantly flashed his megawatt smile and began hamming it up.

Here's one 'hamming...'

Hollywood appeal

As important as football is to Arrington, it is hardly his only pursuit. He earned rave reviews for his stint as a judge on ESPN's reality show "Dream Job" and did a cameo for a television pilot starring Jennifer Love-Hewitt in the offseason. He has caught the acting bug. Hollywood screenwriter and producer Benny Medina met with Arrington a few times and sees potential in him.

"We talked about maybe trying to become America's next action hero or something like that," Arrington said. "But all the Hollywood stuff is tentative. The bottom line is my main goal is to try to bring the Lombardi Trophy back here and be a part of the Washington Redskins' reemergence."

As confident and at ease as Arrington appears in front of the camera, he has a nervous core. That shy kid is still inside of him, and even speaking to a group of youngsters can give Arrington fits. His hands get clammy and his stomach churns. The anxiety is similar to the feeling that can overwhelm him before games.

Michael Arrington has seen his son become "a bundle of nerves" and said he listens to music ranging from "The Eye of the Tiger" to the theme from "The Lion King" to focus before a game or appearance, trying to relax. "He wouldn't want me telling you about 'The Lion King,' " his father said, "but he uses music from various movies or situations that are inspirational to kind of get that little oomph you need to go out and meet the challenge before you."

No matter where his talents takes him -- to Hollywood or the Pro Football Hall of Fame -- Arrington said he always wants to call Washington home. "If they get rid of me I'll be okay," Arrington said. "I'll live at my house in Annapolis and go crabbing and I'll still go to Redskins games and get real, real active in the community; when I have the opportunity and time permits me I want to make changes in the community.

"This is my home. I love Pittsburgh and I'll probably eventually go back and do some things there, but this is my home, man. I have never been embraced like this in my whole entire life."

THREE WOMEN TOP CAREERS WITH PINK SUGAR

By Melissa Marchel, Business Writer

Bejeweled tank tops transformed three Oklahoma women from professional shoppers to professional merchandisers.

Oklahomans Rachel Doner, Julie Methvin and her sister Jennifer Najera have created a line of T-shirts and tank tops adorned with Swarovski crystals. The garments are sold under the Pink Sugar label, a company the sisters formed. The women, who have had no previous business experience, began designing the garments after Najera got the idea while shopping for her 18-month-old daughter.

"I was shopping around for jeans and noticed some expensive jeans with rhinestones, and I thought, 'I could make these,'" Najera said.

She and her sister began making clothes adorned with phrases such as Lucky, Luxe, Loca, and the trademark Pink Sugar.

"To be honest, the first few shirts took me an hour, but now I can make one in five minutes," Methvin said.

After a barrage of compliments and requests for the T-shirts, the sisters decided to start a business and take their creations to the retail level. They persuaded Doner, a graphic artist, to join the team.

The Oklahoma threads have spread to boutiques across the region and have been spotted on celebrities such as actress Jennifer Love Hewitt and Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland.

Demand for the tops has increased so much that the trio is hoping to tap the West Coast market. But the westward expansion is somewhat unplanned.

Najera is married to former University of Oklahoma standout and NBA basketball player Eduardo Najera. He was traded last week by the Dallas Mavericks to the Golden State Warriors.

The women say Jennifer Najera's move from Dallas to San Franscisco couldn't have come at a better time.

"I think the move might heighten what we want to do," Jennifer Najera said. "Anything that sells well in California sells anywhere."

Doner and Methvin will continue to design, produce and market the fashions from Oklahoma City while Jennifer Najera handles paperwork and keeps track of orders.

"This is a new opportunity for us," Methvin said. "What was done in Dallas can be done in San Francisco."

Pink Sugar's sparkly tanks and tees can be found in about 25 stores from Alaska to California to Texas, Jennifer Najera said. About seven shops in Oklahoma, including Allyson's Closet, Cloverleaf, Silver Accents, and A-Z on Campus Corner in Norman, also stock the garments.

Much of the distribution has been generated from merchants who have seen the women wearing the clothes, the women said.

"I will walk into a store and people will compliment my shirt, then I say, 'Actually, I work for them,'" Doner said.

The women plan to attend two major retail trade shows -- Spree, a Dallas tradeshow for independent designers, and the MAGIC tradeshow in Las Vegas.

The entrepreneurs acknowledge they've had no previous experience in the fashion industry, but relied heavily on their college experience.

All three graduated from OU -- Doner with a degree in graphic design, and Methvin and Najera with business degrees.

"We just knew what we liked," Methvin said. "In college, it was always a dream to do fashion. All the business marketing girls wanted to be buyers for stores like Neiman Marcus. So we decided to just do it and have our clothes sell in Neiman's."

Pink Sugar also makes jewelry and printed long-sleeved T-shirts. Prices for the clothes range from $50 to $100.

Doner said the team already is designing the spring collection.

"It's low-maintenance, but high fashion," Methvin said. "You can wear it in the morning to the gym or wear it out to the hottest night club. That's why we liked the idea. We live hectic lives, we want to look good all the time."

MONROEVILLE NATIVE MAKES THE
STARS SHINE EVEN BRIGHTER

By Gretchen McKay, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

From Miami to Los Angeles

He should have been happy, right? For a while he was. By age 28, though, Brett Freedman was again feeling restless. The cure, he concluded, could be found only in Hollywood, where he could become a part of popular culture.

While the move West pretty much landed him back at square one, Freedman took it all in stride. As he puts it, "Sometimes you have to take a couple of steps back to leap forward."

After the Heaton cover, more good work started trickling in, including a Christina Aguilera CD cover. But it wasn't until his family saw a Freedman-styled Sharon Lawrence on the cover of McCall's in the grocery store that they realized the level of his success.

"After that it was, 'Brett's doing great,' " he says with a chuckle.

For Freedman, the "aha" moment was when he did Paltrow's hair and makeup for the cover of British Elle. He also remembers with pride being on the red carpet with Zeta-Jones at a film festival -- he can't remember which, he's been to so many -- as the crowd took in the very bronzy, tousled hair style he'd created for the evening.

"It was such a Hollywood moment," he says. "It was like, wow, this is such a wild ride."

His "wild ride" has led to a six-figure income and a day rate that begins at $3,000 and quickly escalates upward depending on the client. "Even I can't believe how much money I get paid -- enough to buy a new home in West Hollywood," he jokes.

Now, a typical day might find Freedman, who is represented by Celestine Agency, doing Jennifer Love-Hewitt's hair and makeup for a magazine cover in the morning, being interviewed by a magazine on hair trends in the afternoon and then doing Thorne-Smith for "The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn" in the early evening. Or he might find himself on a plane with a star like Dunst, headed for a movie premiere or weeklong press junket. Since he landed in Los Angeles eight years ago, Freedman has traveled to France, Spain, London, Sweden, Guatemala and even Bali for photo shoots.

BEYOND SCOWLING: VICTORIA FILM SHOOT OFFERS SONJA BENNETT COMIC RELIEF

by Michael D. Reid
Times Colonist

If there's one thing Sonja Bennett (pictured) has learned about television since being cast as Det. Samantha Walters on Cold Squad, it's to be ready for anything.

"That was hard for me because I'm very anal. I like to prepare a lot and in TV you have to throw that out the window or you'll always be unhappy," says the Vancouver actress best known for her role on CTV's Gemini Award-winning series that starts its seventh season on Sept. 4 at 9 p.m.

The cheerful graduate of Langara College's Studio 58 theatre program looks anything but unhappy during a break from shooting Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber, a made-for-TV movie filming in Victoria this month.

Bennett, 24, appears to have learned her lesson well on a sweltering August afternoon during a playful shoot on the second floor of a downtown heritage building masquerading as San Francisco's hip Liquid advertising agency.

Moments earlier, Bennett and the film's star, Jennifer Love Hewitt, were in the throes of a full-blown giggle fit -- "laughing our way into overtime," as a crew member quipped -- as they worked on a scene for director Dana Lustig.

Love, as the film's star is affectionately called by cast and crew, plays Katya Livingston, a bitchy advertising copywriter who writes a tell-all diary about her career and sexual escapades in the film adaptation of Adele Lang's bestseller. It will air on the Oxygen Network in the U.S., and Movie Central.

Looking the part with her funky silver earrings, matching necklace, lacy V-neck blouse and a flowing burgundy skirt, Bennett plays Eliza, the "hippie chick" friend and World Vision volunteer who sees Katya as her project.

"I've always believed there's good in Katya and I'm trying to draw it out," says Bennett, her hair dyed strawberry blonde for the part. "She starts to see the error of her ways and turns around."

In the scene prompting bouts of convulsive laughter from Love, Bennett and Jenny Clements, who plays the agency's uptight "gatekeeper," Eliza offers Katya some organic prunes, triggering some amusing unscripted responses.

A few minutes later, during a chat with Bennett in "Katya's office" -- a spiffy corner room with ad mock-ups and Post-It notes pasted on a cluttered easel, Got Milk? posters, design books and a cool candy-apple red Alienware laptop -- Love playfully barges in to heap praise on her co-star.

"She's awesome!" says Love with a 500-megawatt grin. "The best ever!"

Bennett seems genuinely moved, and a tad embarrassed -- especially since Confessions marks her comedy debut. "I'm usually scowling," laughs the actress who has played angry teens, psychics, bank robbers and a teacher.

"She's a very funny lady," says Bennett later, returning Love's compliment. "Her comedic chops are so smart. Technically, she's unbelievable."

This has been a busy summer for the vivacious blonde actress -- and it's about to get busier when Bennett flies to Toronto next week to start work on Atom Egoyan's Where the Truth Lies. It's part of a roll that followed her acclaimed performance as a menacing teenager who is dangerously possessive of her father, a meek physician, in Punch, the dark 2002 Canadian comedy-drama written and directed by her father Guy Bennett.

Confessions marks the second time in as many months Bennett has been in Victoria. She also played a teenager who has come to terms with a freaky virus afflicting townsfolk in Marker, the horror film directed by John Paizs.

"I'm staying on the same floor of the same hotel," she said. "It's starting to feel like home. I had to remind myself not to walk into the lounge in my pyjamas to get coffee."

Bennett, a huge fan of Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter, says being cast opposite Kevin Bacon, Colin Firth and Alison Lohman in the Victoria-raised auteur's murder-mystery based on the Rupert Holmes novel was a dream come true -- even if means she'll have to toggle between film projects.

She plays Bonnie Trout, a Grade 2 teacher who switches identities with Karen O'Connor (Lohman), a journalist attempting to uncover the truth behind the breakup of a showbiz duo similar to Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin.

"It's a more sneaky way to infiltrate their lives," says Bennett, who has almost finished the book. "The screenplay's great, the cast is great. I'm so excited."

What really excites her is that -- unlike too many Canadian films -- Egoyan's project will likely play to a large global audience because of his reputation.

"I think the audience totals for Punch for Canada were about 18," she quips. "And four of them were family."

The actress says she was so convinced she would never be cast in an Egoyan film she passed on a chance to audition while in Toronto until a casting director told her Egoyan had seen Punch and wanted to meet her.

It wasn't the first time Bennett had hesitated or been stricken with disbelief -- or that her performance in Punch would lead to life-changing opportunities.

When Punch was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival two years ago, the actress was bombarded with business cards from various industry players, including Marcia Schulman, head of casting for Fox Television.

"I didn't call her," Bennett recalled with a laugh. "I was in theatre school at the time. I had eight lines in a show playing in a dirty little basement theatre."

Shulman persisted, however. She tracked Bennett down; signed her to an eight-month contract and put her up in a luxury hotel in L.A. where she read piles of scripts for potential pilots in the hopes one might fit her profile.

It took some persuasion, however. Bennett initially told her agent she couldn't fly to L.A. to meet with network executives because she was rehearsing a Studio 58 play. The network offered to fly her down and back on her day off, and they signed a contract that would let her finish school.

While a hit series didn't materialize, the actress started what would become a steady stream of work after auditioning for Fox's Vancouver-shot John Doe.

Although she appreciated the opportunity, she says L.A. just wasn't for her.

"To be fair, I never experienced L.A. in any other context besides complete isolation under extremely high pressure," she said. "I was on contract, all by myself, straight out of theatre school and I had no car. I spent months walking to mini-malls on Avenue of the Stars and back. Everything revolved around the business and I felt very suffocated."

While Bennett's profile is rising on screen - including a recurring role on The Dead Zone as Rachel Caldwell, a woman Anthony Michael Hall's character is suspected of murdering -- she says theatre is her first love.

The perky actress can also soon be seen in Godivas, a new Canadian TV series about a group of funky restaurant employees written by playwright and screenwriter Michael MacLennan (Queer as Folk).

She considers it another part of a "huge gift" from her father.

"I was lucky. With Punch, he essentially handed me this beautiful opportunity on a silver platter."

FAMOUS FOLKS MUST LIKE
COMING TO OUR COUNTY

by Tony Muliere

First Willie Mays, then President Bush.

In a span of eight days, two famous Americans graced the pages of The Herald-Mail newspapers after visits to the area.

The Mays visit gave Hagerstown an opportunity for redemption after the way the Hall of Famer was treated when he made his minor league debut here in 1950 as a young ballplayer.

The Bush visit to Hedgesville, W.Va., was a stop on the campaign trail for the president.

It's not the first time famous people have been here and I'm sure it won't be the last.

In the 27 years I have worked at The Herald-Mail, there have been quite a few star sightings. Here's what I remember:

Other presidents have visited.

· Bill Clinton played golf at a few courses in the area, including Black Rock, while he was in office.

· Jimmy Carter went fishing in the area.

· The first President Bush attended a baseball game at Municipal Stadium and brought Chicago Bears great Walter Payton with him.

The stadium has been the site for a couple of star sightings.

· Just this summer, actor Kevin Dobson was here to catch his son's minor league game.

· Who can forget the night Orioles great Jim Palmer pitched in a game at Municipal Stadium on a rehabilitation assignment?

· Retired Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller visited the stadium one night and let the media, including me, take a few swats at his pitches.

And there have been others from the political arena.

· Vice President Dick Cheney spoke to the Chamber.

· Vice President Al Gore popped in one Saturday to watch his son play a football game at St. James School.

Hollywood has made its mark here, too.

· Bob Hope and Jay Leno - two big stars - performed at The Maryland Theatre on separate occasions. Of course, there have been others who have performed at the historic theater, but those are the two who stick out in my mind.

· Jessica Lange and Ed Harris were at tiny Winter Street School to shoot a scene from the movie "Sweet Dreams," a story about country singer Patsy Cline.

· Nicolas Cage and Shirley MacLaine were at The Maryland Theatre to do a scene from the movie "Guarding Tess."

· Robert Duvall and Jeff Daniels starred in "Gods and Generals," which was shot here and at other sites in the Tri-State area. Television mogul Ted Turner made a cameo appearance on the set as well.

There have been other star sightings, too.

· Singer Art Garfunkel was found strolling along Leitersburg Pike after spending a night in Waynesboro, Pa.

· The Beach Boys performed at the old Fairgrounds.

· Soap opera stars have visited from time to time.

And, of course, there have been countless stars from the world of sports who have visited here at one time or another.

Jennifer Love Hewitt has been raving about Mercury Music Prize nominees Snow Patrol.

She's a huge fan of the boys and while being interviewed about her movie 'Garfield' in the States, she couldn't stop telling everyone about them, although she couldn't quite remember the title of their album:

"There's this great band that I just got introduced to in London. They are kind of like a Coldplay."

"I think they're really, really good. I don't know what the name of the record is, but they're called Snow Patrol."

WHO'S NEWS?

I love hearing young actors, particularly those admired by teens, talk about their relationship with their parents. Jennifer Love Hewitt, who starred with fat cat "Garfield" in his summer movie, is 25 but still lives happily with mom Pat.

"That relationship is important to me," she says. "It saves me every day. I can put on a dress and play the fancy star, but when I go home I'm only important because the trash needs to go out."

Watch for Hewitt in several new films, with co-stars like Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin. This winter, she'll be in a new TV version of "A Christmas Carol," with Kelsey Grammer as Scrooge. She'll play his lost love.

DO YOU IMDB?: HOW A FANATIC HELPED
PUT HOLLYWOOD UNDER ONE BIG TENT?

By Nikki Finke LA Weekly Writer

It settles screaming matches, decides friendly bets, and solves nagging questions. Its a globally recognized authority, yet it had humble beginnings. Its rarely wrong, always up to date and sometimes even ahead of the curve. In fact, its not too much of an exaggeration to say it functions in its field like a god (God, with a capital G, even had his own credits page, albeit briefly), deciding when life is created or mutated or ended â?? which is why we bow and scrape to its all-knowing supremacy and celebrate its uniqueness. We need it, we love it and we applaud it. Heck, if it were a drug, wed be hopelessly addicted to it.

Here's one.....

For those who dont consider themselves semi-authorities on entertainment and dont let a day go by without consulting it, and consulting it, and consulting it again, IMDB works like this: Lets say you and your crew are arguing whether Quentin Tarantino really was the first to resurrect blaxploitation star Pam Griers career.   You consult IMDB: It says she had a role in the sequel to Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure. Then one of your pals asks the name of that forgettable flick. IMDB says it was Bill & Teds Bogus Journey, also known as Bill & Ted Go to Hell. Someone jokes that the director probably never worked again. IMDB says yes, Peter Hewitt did work again, but his career trajectory became, well, bizarre. After directing hours No. 1 and No. 2 of the trendoid TV series Wild Palms â?? along with better-known Kathryn Bigelow (hour No. 4), Keith Gordon (No. 3 and No. 5), and Phil Joanou (No. 6) â?? Hewitt turned to mostly kiddie fare, like this summers Garfield: The Movie, with Bill Murray as the voice of that cat best known for clinging to the rear windows of Volvo station wagons and Jennifer Love Hewitt (no relations) as Garfields veterinarian.   Just the thought of J-Love turns the conversation into an argument over which Party of Five hottie is hotter, JLH or Neve Campbell. Hang on; one guy wants to know what movies Neve is doing lately. Well, IMDB says . . . And so on, and so on.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN!

In L.A., a celebrity-studded crowd of Juicy Couture loyalists gathered at a lush private estate to celebrate the terrycloth juggernaut's newest category: swimwear. As a DJ spun tunes like "California Dreamin,'" fans including Kate Beckinsale, Selma Blair, and Brittany Murphy sang the line's praises.

"It looks sexy, but you can actually function in it," said Jennifer Love Hewitt, who donned a kelly green bikini top.

Fashion student Venus Williams was doing a little extracurricular study. "I'm in the middle of a swimwear course in school," she said. "Juicy's fabrics are so comfortable, and now everyone's trying to do it." Added sister Serena: "I have large breasts, so I can never find bikinis that fit me. This fits!" Juicy designers Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Taylor, dressed in matching white dresses, stopped for a moment to take it all in. "I am thrilled," Skaist-Levy said. "It's just been a perfect day."
