Here a Love, There a Love, Everywhere a Love.... |
From Newsday - March 13, 2005 NO HEROES HERE by Ken Davidoff OK, given that that's about it on the trade front, let's get back to steroids. We don't mind Congress' decision to call for a hearing, but the way it has gone about it smacks of amateurism. The list of people subpoenaed appears quite random. Curt Schilling is outspoken in general, for instance, but if you're looking for an intelligent person who has been outspoken on steroids, Atlanta's John Smoltz would have been a far better choice. And what about issuing a subpoena to Jason Giambi and then preparing to back off because of BALCO? What, they just found out that Giambi was part of BALCO? That said, we don't have a grain of sympathy for baseball. Bud Selig reminds us of the Jennifer Love Hewitt character from "I Know What You Did Last Summer." He purports to feel guilt for what transpired under his watch, yet he wants only to run from his past. Call it, "I Know What You Did Last Decade." The tagline from the movie puts it best: "If you're going to bury the truth, make sure it stays buried." Selig loves taking credit for his many accomplishments, such as competitive balance, the wild card and the three divisions. That's fine. But then he should take the blame, too, when things go wrong, as they most certainly did. The commissioner prefers to blame the Players Association (although he never credits them for any of the good things). What's Selig going to blame Don Fehr and Gene Orza for next? Lyme disease?
