Puerto Rican actress, singer and dancer, Edith
Diaz, died on December 19, 2009, at a North Hollywood nursing home,
of heart failure, according to her peer and friend Miluka Rivera.
Diaz was 70.
She was best known for her costarring role of (Lupe), opposite Hector Elizondo, (Abraham Rodriguez) on the first historic Latino TV sitcom Popi” (CBS, 1976). Also for her prime role as Julia in Broadway’s Touring Company of Two Gentlemen from Verona (1973) and in the film, Sister Act and Sister Act 2: Back In the Habit. She has made numerous film and television appearances, most notably; Sister Act (1992) and Sister Act 2: Back in the habit (1993), as a feisty Choir Nun, Barbara, with Woopie Goldberg, Nick of Time(1995) with Johnny Depp and Born on the Fourth of July (1989) with Tom Cruise. Ms. Diaz reunited with Ms. Goldberg in Theodore Rex (1996). Her last films were; First Watch (2003) and “Oh Baby!” (2008). Her TV episodes include, St. Elsewhere, The Twilight Zone and All in the Family. In her last TV movie Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter (1991) she played Mother Arnaz. Edith Diaz obtained a BA, in drama from the University of Puerto Rico. While in New York, she studied with Stella Adler and the Actor’s Studio. The versatile actress was one of the founding members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Minorities Committee, along with Carmen Zapata (another actress who played one of the nuns in the Sister Act movies), Henry Darrow and Ricardo Montalbán, during the Guild’s presidency of Dennis Weaver, in the early 70’s. “Edith will be remembered as a gifted performer, a union Latino rights activist and a loving friend,” declares Miluka Rivera, who is coordinating Diaz’s Memorial in February. Ms. Diaz was born on October 23, 1939 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, she was a life long resident of Los Angeles. In addition to her brother, Arcadio Diaz Quiñones, a noted Princeton University Professor, her sister Nilsa, 2 nephews and 4 nieces survive her.
