HOLLYWOOD
-- "The Lord of the Rings" won five of the six
nominations it received at the DVD Premiere Awards on
Tuesday (Jan. 14) at a star-studded celebrity event which
honors highlights in DVD film releases.
The
first in the trilogy of the Peter Jackson fantasy film
won Best New Extra Features for a New Release while
"Beauty and the Beast" won Best Overall New
Extra Features for a Library title and "Hunchback
II" won Best Animated DVD Premiere Movie while
"Gentleman's Game" won Best Live Action Movie.
More
than 500 people vote for the winners from the DVD
Premiere Academy in this second annual event formerly
known as the Video Premiere Awards. It is the video
industrys largest awards program and the only one
that recognizes the individual artistic achievements in
movies produced for home viewing and special editions of
theatrical releases.
The
awards also included honorees such as director/writer
Quentin Tarantino, Miramaxs co-chairmen Bob and
Harvey Weinstein, director Peter Jackson and sister
actresses Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
Disney
is the studio copping the most wins, with seven, while
"LOTR's" New Line won five. By studios,
Universal and First Look won three, Miramax, Artisan and
Lions Gate won two while Fox, MGM, Screen Media, BMW
Films and Ifilm each won one award.
The
awards were presented at the Wiltern Theatre, in Los
Angeles, sponsored by DVD Premieres
magazine, a sister publication to Variety
and is a benefit for the Childrens Action Network,
an L.A.-based, national charity committed to raising
awareness about the joys of adoption and encouraging the
public to respond to the needs of waiting children.
Curmudgeonly
host Ben Stein, Emmy-winning TV game show host, actor and
author shared the stage with other presenters including
Bruce Boxleitner, Gary Busey, David Carradine, Coolio,
Vivica A. Fox, The Hanson Brothers, John Landis, Nick
Mancuso, Kevin Smith, Leah Thompson, Robert Walden and
Henry Winkler. Soul and blues singer Solomon Burke
performed.
